Order of Courage

On August 21, 1996, the Star of Courage and the Cross of Courage were converted to the three-class, nickel-silver Order of Courage. The Order was designed by Mykola Lebid.

Star of the Order of Courage
The 63mm Star of the Order of Courage is made of silver and has the shape of an octagonal star with bundles of diverging rays. The center contains a round medallion in dark crimson enamel and in the center a blue enamel circle with the Tryzub of Prince Volodymyr of Kyiv. In the upper part of the medallion, above the circle, there is an inscription: FOR COURAGE and in the lower part there are two laurel branches. All inscriptions are embossed in gilt.

Order of Courage 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class

The Order of Courage 1st class is made of gilded silver in the form of a 54mm white enamel, equilateral cross superimposed on a laurel wreath. Two crossed broad swords pointed down diverge from under the cross. The blue enamel center, bordered in gilt, contains the gilt Tryzub of Prince Volodymyr of Kyiv. The insignia is worn around the neck. The reverse is flat with just a serial number.

The 42mm Order of Courage 2nd class is made of silver in the shape of a cross with wide pointed ends. In the middle of the sign is a white enamel equilateral cross with white enamel, from under which two crossed swords point downwards. In the center of the cross is a dark crimson disk, bordered in gilt, with the Tryzub of Prince Volodymyr of Kyiv on blue enamel. The top of the crimson medallion is inscribed FOR COURAGE and on either lower side is a laurel branch. The suspension ribbon contains a 16mm gilded floral wreath.

The 42mm nickel-silver Order of Courage 3rd class is otherwise identical to the 2nd class without the floral suspension ribbon device.

Five State Emergency Service (SES) staff members were honored for courage with the Order of Courage 3rd Class by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
