Cruz de Guerra

The Mexican Cruz de Guerra was not instituted in 1949 and is awarded to military personnel in time of war or armed conflict for heroic actions, which do not merit the award of the Medal of Valor. The red enameled gilt Maltese cross, issued in three classes (gilt, silver and bronze), with concave stepped terminations and a very large central medallion on the obverse, which bears the head of Cuauhtemoc (the last Aztec ruler of Tenochtitlan) in an eagle war helmet on a red enamel background, surrounded by band inscribed, CRUZ DE GUERRA above and the class of medal below. It is suspended from a red ribbon with a top bar in matching finish inscribed, MEXICO. The reverse is plain.

War Cross 1st and 2nd Cl.

It is possible that this medal might have been awarded to the San Patricio retroactively since their heroism is still celebrated annually in San Angel to this day. More likely though, the War Cross refers to some of the medals discussed below.
