Medal for the Battle of Chapultepec

During September 1847, American forces launched an assault on the Mexican forces holding Chapultepec in Mexico City. The castle, a former convent, perched atop a 200-foot tall hill, was an important position for the defense of Mexico City. The Battle of Chapultepec saw about 2,000 US troops attack and overwhelm 880 Mexican troops. The U.S. forces took Chapultepec following a 90-minute battle.

The obverse of the white enamel central obverse, features two golden crossed swords in the center tied with a gold ribbon and circumscribed, COMBATAIO EN DEFENSA DE LA PATRIA. The reverse is inscribed on seven straight-lines, CHAPULTEPEC 8, 12 Y 13 DE SETIEMBRE DE 1847. A variant bears the obverse inscription, COMBATIO POR LA INTEGRIDAD DEL TERRITORIO. This example is in the Museo Nacional de las Intervenciones, ex-Convento de Churubusco, Ciudad de México.
