Discovery Expedition (1901-1910)

Robert Falcon Scott was a British Navy Captain and early 20th century polar explorer. Scott commanded the Antarctic Expedition of the HMS Discovery (1901-1904). He proved to be a competent scientific investigator and leader. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in the British Navy upon his return to England.

The expedition resulted in primarily scientific-discoveries, delving into such subjects as biology, zoology, geology, meteorology, and magnetism. The many geographic discoveries included Antarctica's longest river (the Onyx River), the Cape Crozier Emperor Penguin colony, King Edward VII Land and the Polar Plateau. An unsuccessful attempt to reach the South Pole saw the expedition reach the farthest South mark of 82°17'S latitude. The Pole would remain unreachable until 1911.
