Polar Medals

Italy

General Umberto Nobile piloted the airship, Norge, which may have been the first aircraft to actually reach the North Pole in 1926, and which was indisputably the first to fly across the polar ice cap from Europe to America.

Umberto Nobile Polar Expedition Commemorative

Captain Sora Commemorative

Captain Gennaro Sora (of the Italian Army Alpine ski detachment) made a heroic over-the-ice sled run from the Cittą di Milano support ship in an attempt to rescue Nobile, while Matteoda and Albertini of the the University Section of the Italian Alpine Club did the same from the Italian-hired ship Braganza.
