Suiyuan Campaign
The Suiyuan Campaign, 1935-1937, was an unsuccessful attempt, during the Second Sino-Japanese War, by the Inner Mongolian Army and the Grand Han Righteous Army, both supported by the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), to wrest control of Suiyuan Province from the Republic of China. In the early 30’s, Suiyuan was occupied by the Shanxi warlord, Yan Xishisn, who mined Suiyuan's iron resources, reorganized the province's finances and significantly increased land under cultivation. The campaign proceeded the Second Sino-Japanese War. Japan denied any involvement, but the Mongolian combatants were definitely supported by and possibly led by the IJA and also availed itself of Japan's air power. The defense of the province marked the first major victory for the Chinese National Revolutionary Army. Suiyuan eventually became part of the short-lived puppet state of Mengjiang or the Mongol Border Land from 1937 to 1945. ![]() Mongol Horseman (Batzaya Photography)
