The Battle of Baitag Bogd Mountain (1946-48)
The 1946-48 Battle of Baitag Bogd Mountain or the Beitashan Incident involved a border dispute involving China, the Soviet Union and Mongolia. Mongolia became involved when an elite Qinghai Chinese Muslim Cavalry Unit attacked Mongolian and Soviet positions. Chinese Muslim and Turkic Kazakh forces working for the Chinese Kuomintang battled Soviet and Mongolian troops. In June 1947, the Mongolians and the Soviets launched an attack against the Kazakhs, driving them back to the Chinese side of the border. Fighting would continue for another year. An additional 13 clashes took place between June 5, 1947 and July 1948. In early June 1947, Pei-ta-shan was retaken by Chinese troops, who continued fighting in spite of heavy Soviet and Mongolian bomber raids. In January 1948, 700 Chinese Cavalry crossed into Khobdo, Mongolia and attacked Mongolian Border Posts.
