Lloyd's Medals
Lloyd's, as it has come to be known, traces its origins to Lloyd's Coffee House opened by Edward Lloyd in 1686. The establishment was a popular place for sailors, merchants, and ship-owners, and Lloyd catered to them with reliable shipping news. The coffee house soon became recognized as an ideal place for obtaining marine insurance. During the 19th Century, Lloyd's established a system of medals to recognize acts of courage at sea. Initially, the medals were awarded by approval at the general meetings of the subscribers. From 1870 to 1941, decisions on the award of medals were made by the Committee of Lloyd's and after 1940 by the Medals Sub-committee. The Lloyd's Medal may refer to any one of four separate awards bestowed by Lloyd's of London. There are variations within each of the four types.
