Cacique's Crown of Honor

The Cacique's Crown of Honor is the second highest award in the Order of Service of Guyana. It is limited to fifty citizens of Guyana. It may be awarded to any citizen of Guyana who has rendered service of an exceptionally high quality beyond the normal call. The award is also given posthumously for duty in the public service, social and voluntary services, industry or trade unions, or in any other areas of public service, or achieved excellence of national or international standing and recognition in the arts, professions, sciences or sport or in any other area of activity. It may also be awarded to institutions, organizations, corporations or a group of people who have made substantial contributions to the national economy, for achievements of a significant advance resulting in increased efficiency, for applying technology to production or development process in industry, or other significant achievements and contributions to national development. The president awarded the Cacique Crown of Honor to ten citizens in 1970 and two additional citizens annually as long as a vacancy exists.

The obverse of the pale green enamel circular medallion bears a Cacique Crown (an Amerindian headdress - Spaniards extended the word as a title for the leaders of practically all indigenous groups that they encountered in the Western Hemisphere) in the center surrounded by a double dental border. The reverse inscribed in the center, HONOUR with three stylized leaves above and below, circumscribed by the inscription, ONE PEOPLE - ONE NATION - ONE DESTINY (the motto of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana) and GUYANA at the base.

Order was instituted in 1970 following Guyana becoming a republic. Since 1976, it is the country's third-ranking Order. It consists of three General Awards and three Special Awards, the Cacique's Crown of Honor (C.C.H.) being both a General Award and the Order's second highest award, limited to one hundred living citizens of Guyana and awarded for service of an exceptionally high degree beyond the normal call of duty in the public service, social and voluntary services, industry or trade unions, or in any other area of public service, or achieving excellence of national or international standing and recognition in the arts, professions, sciences or sport or in any other area of activity.
