III Red Cross Awards

The Prussian Red Cross, established in 1898, awarded its Red Cross medal, between 1898 and 1917, in three classes with the following five bars (awarded with 2nd and 3rd class medals only) for colonial service: SUDAFRIKA 1899/1900, OSTASIEN 1900/01, CHARBIN 1904/05, SUDWESTAFRIKA 1904/06 and PEKING. A sixth bar, TURKEI 1897for a single unofficial third class Greco-Turkish War award is unconfirmed.

The first class medal is in the form of a pin back Geneva Cross. The obverse of the round medal (2nd and 3rd class versions) depicts a crowned Greek cross with the monogram WRAV (Wilhelm Rex Auguste Viktoria) at each corner for Wilhelm King of Prussia and his consort Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria. The reverse is inscribed in old German, FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DAS ROTHE KREUZ (For service with the Red Cross) with a sprig of oak leaves to the left.
