Colonial Warriors Association Membership Badges

Colonial Veterans

The Colonial Warriors Membership badge was in the form of a South Western Protection Force (Sudwester) Hat was the membership badge of Colonial Warriors Clubs and in 1922, of the German Colonial Warriors Association. The history of Colonial Warriors Clubs dates back to their founding in 1896. In 1902 the first umbrella organization was formed in Berlin, as the Association of Warrior Clubs for Former China and Africa Warriors of Germany. Different clubs had different badges until the German Colonial Warriors Association adopted the Order of the Lion in 1922 (see below).

The small (27 by 12 mm) Sudwester badges were made of silvered non-ferrous metal with the “stick pin” soldered to the reverse. There are several versions of the badge with one having a larger cockade in the middle of the uplifted brim. Two of the badges are for ten year memberships.

Gilt Version

The Elephant Order was created in 1921 for all veterans of active service in the colonies during the World War I (1914-18). It is in the shape of a round white metal badge worn on the left breast. It depicts an elephant over an oak leaf wreath with the curved inscription, SÜDSEE AFRIKA KIAUTSCHOU above.

Lion Order

The Lion Order, designed by Karl Mobius, was created by the German Colonial Veterans League in 1922. It was presented in white metal to all veterans of the Schutztruppe, East Asian army and Imperial navy who had served in the colonies and in bronze for German citizens involved in colonial efforts at home.

The silvered metal first class award was worn as a pin-on breast badge. The bronze second class medal was suspended from a ribbon bar. The badge is in the shape of an eight-pointed star depicting a reclining lion in front of a palm tree over a Sudwester hat and crossed broad swords (tips up) over oak leaves. Above the lion is the curved inscription, FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DIE KOLONIEN.
