Special Insignia

The Nurse's Palm for wartime service was awarded in bronze (1 year of service), silver (2 years of service) and gold (3 or more years of service). Officially referred to as the Special Badge, it is an official badge created during May 1917 by the Ministry of War and issued with a letter of attribution. The two palms are joined in the center by a Geneva Cross. It was awarded across all three Red Cross organizations.

Nurse's Palm in Gold and Red Cross Palm in Gold

The Red Cross Palm is an award for "quality of service" issued in bronze, silver or gold. It could also be issued for a singular act of heroism and was also awarded across all three Red Cross organizations.

Two styles of Suspension Bar in matching finishes (gold, silver or bronze) may also be found on many of the Red Cross medals. They both read, CROIX ROUGE FRANCAISE.

From 1907, the actions of the three organizations (SSBM, ADF and UFF) were coordinated by a Central Committee in order to optimize their effectiveness. During the First World War, the three French Red Cross societies, as auxiliaries of the army's health service, mobilized more than 68,000 nurses and created nearly 1,500 auxiliary hospitals, infirmaries, aid stations and canteens for the care of sick and wounded soldiers.
