Nightingale's Decorations

One may conclude that Nightingale at best was a controversial figure, strong, aggressive, over-bearing, intemperate, opinionated and controlling, demanding total obedience from her nurses, but there is no denial of her humanitarian efforts during the Crimean War and her contribution to military nursing and nursing in general, which was her major achievement.

Her decorations and medals reflect this: (1) first recipient of the Royal Red Cross 1883; (2) Dame of Grace of the Order of St John (DGStJ) (1904); (3) first female recipient of the Order of Merit (1907); (4) Geneva Cross and (5) the Norwegian Red Cross Society Badge of Honor.
