East and Central Africa Medal (1899)

The 36mm, silver East and Central Africa Medal was a campaign medal approved for issue to officers and men of the British armed forces in East and Central Africa. The obverse of the medal features a left facing portrait of Queen Victoria holding the Royal Scepter with the inscription, VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX. The reverse depicts Britannia standing and facing right, holding a trident and palm branch, behind her is a lion and the rising sun. The reverse inscription reads, EAST & CENTRAL AFRICA.

A small number of bronze versions were awarded to native troops and camp followers. Seven awards were also made to women. Approximately 2,500 were issued.

The four clasps were issued: (1) LUBWA'S (September 23, 1897 - February 24, 1898); (2) UGANDA 1897-98 (July 20, 1897 - March 19, 1898); (3) 1898 (1898) and (4) UGANDA 1899 (March 21 - May 2, 1899).
