East and Central Africa Medal (1899)
The 36mm, silver East and Central Africa Medal was a campaign medal approved for issue to officers and men of the British armed forces in East and Central Africa. The obverse of the medal features a left facing portrait of Queen Victoria holding the Royal Scepter with the inscription, VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX. The reverse depicts Britannia standing and facing right, holding a trident and palm branch, behind her is a lion and the rising sun. The reverse inscription reads, EAST & CENTRAL AFRICA. A small number of bronze versions were awarded to native troops and camp followers. Seven awards were also made to women. Approximately 2,500 were issued.
