Prussian Red Cross

By the turn of the 20th century, German Red Cross volunteer medics and nurses were serving overseas in colonial wars such as the Boxer Rebellion in China 1900-01, the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 (where they served on the Boer side) and the Herero Rebellion 1904-07. The North German Lloyd passenger ship converted to a hospital ship for the Boxer Rebellion, Gera, served in China between July 1900 and June 1901. The GERA was a 5,005 gross ton ship, length 415ft x beam 48ft, one funnel, two masts, with a speed of 13 knots.

SS Gera

The Prussian Red Cross awarded its Red Cross medal for service during the Boxer Rebellion in two of its three classes (2nd and 3rd) with 77 bars, OSTASIEN 1900/01, for service on the Gera and five bars, PEKING, for service at the Legation. The obverse of the 2nd and 3rd class versions depicts a crowned Greek cross with the monogram WRAV (Wilhelm Rex Auguste Viktoria) at each corner for Wilhelm King of Prussia and his consort Kaiserin Auguste Viktoria. The reverse is inscribed in old German, FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DAS ROTHE KREUZ (For service with the Red Cross) with a sprig of oak leaves to the left.
