Medal of General Leandro Gomez and the Defense of Paysandu 1865

The bronze medal, 27mm, was issued to commemorate the defense of the Uruguayan town of Paysandu during the opening stages of the War of the Triple Alliance. In December 1864, the Uruguayan anti-Paraguay Colorados, supported by Brazilian troops, laid siege to Paysandu, which was defended by the Uruguayan pro-Paraguay Blanco troops, commanded Gen. Gomez. On January 2, 1865, after a 52-hour bombardment by the Brazilians, Gomez surrendered under the belief that he and his men would be treated as prisoners of war. Instead, Gomez and his men were summarily executed by the Colorados.
