Rebellion of 1863

Medal for General Venancio Flores

In 1863, he started a rebellion (Cruzada Libertadora or Crusade of the Liberator) against the Blanco president Bernardo Berro, which led to civil war in Uruguay. With Argentinian and Brazilian help, by February, 1865 he had taken Montevideo.

The obverse contains the effigy of Venancio Flores. The upper portion is circumscribed, BR GENERAL VENANCIO FLORES. It is signed, Rossi. The central reverse is inscribed, ENTRADA EN MONTEVIDEO 2O FEBRERO 1865. The upper edge is inscribed, CRUZADA LIBERTADORA and CRUZADA LIBERTADORA.
