HEIC Medal for the Anglo-Dutch Java War (1811)
In 1810 Java became a titular French colony, though it continued to be administered and defended primarily by Dutch personnel. The invasion of Java in 1811 was a successful British amphibious operation against the Dutch East Indian island of Java that took place between August and September 1811 during the Napoleonic Wars. In addition to the vessels of the Royal Navy, the HEIC provided the services of several of their ships, led by the Malabar under Commodore John Hayes. The HEIC vessels in the operations, included the Ariel, Aurora, Mornington, Nautilus, Psyche, Thetis, and Vestal. For participation in this assault by Indian troops, the East India Company had this medal struck at its Calcutta mint. The obverse depicts a battle scene at Fort Cornelis with CORNELIS inscribed above the scene. The Persian inscription on the reverse reads, THIS MEDAL WAS CONFERRED IN COMMEMORATION OF THE BRAVERY AND COURAGE EXHIBITED BY THE SEPOYS OF THE ENGLISH COMPANY IN THE CAPTURE OF THE KINGDOM OF JAVA, IN THE YEAR OF THE HIJRA 1228. This is surrounded by The circular inscription, JAVA CONQUERED XXVI (26) AUGUST MDCCCX1 (1811). ![]() HEIC Medal for the Invasion Of Java
