Capture of Ceylon Medal 1795-96
The 48mm Capture of Ceylon Medal was awarded to part of the forces under the command of the East India Company that participated in the British Invasion of Dutch Ceylon, part of the French Revolutionary Wars, over the period July 21, 1795 to February 16, 1796 period. Two medals were cast in gold for officers (generally regarded to have been natives, although sometimes thought to be British Captains Barton and Clarke), with 120-121 being cast in silver for members of the Bengal Artillery (Gun Lascars - Indian recruits retained for manhandling and cleaning field artillery including pioneer work erecting batteries). The medal was instituted on May 15, 1807 by an Order in Council at Fort William, India, and was intended to be worn round the neck with a yellow cord. ![]() Capture of Ceylon Medal with Straight Suspender ![]() Capture of Ceylon Medal on Cord The obverse contains the English inscription, FOR SERVICES ON THE ISLAND OF CEYLON A.D. 1795/6 and the reverse contains the Persian inscription, THIS MEDAL WAS GIVEN BY WAY OF ACKNOWLEDGMENT OF SERVICES IN CEYLON IN THE YEAR OF THE HEGIRA 1209-1210.
